1937 Press Outside view of sugar refinery in New Jersey - nei05012

This is an original press photo. Making life sweeter -- This series of pictures - which for the first time takes you behind the scenes as the sugar which you take for granted is prepared for your table - tell the story of the 200-year-old United States sugar refining industry and of its workers, whose interests are vitally effected by the pending legislation which would allow them to continue in competition with tropical plantation laborers receiving the average wage of one dollar per day. Unlike other industries effected by cheap foreign labor, the home sugar refining industry, ironically enough, is threatened by the price preferences and the cash subsidies which the United States pay to the plantation owners of Cuba, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the Philippine Islands (New Jersey)Photo measures 9 x 7inches. Photo is dated 07-07-1937.
