Maximilian
Kolbe (January 8, 1894–August 14, 1941), also known as Maksymilian or
Massimiliano Maria Kolbe and "Apostle of Consecration to Mary," born
as Rajmund Kolbe, was a Polish Conventual Franciscan friar who volunteered to
die in place of a stranger in the Nazi concentration camp of Auschwitz in
Poland.
Auschwitz-Birkenau
(Konzentrationslager Auschwitz ) was the largest of the German Nazi
concentration and extermination camps. Located in southern Poland, it took its
name from the nearby town of Oświęcim (Auschwitz in German), situated about 50
kilometers west of Kraków and 286 kilometers from Warsaw. Following the German
occupation of Poland in September 1939, Oświęcim was incorporated into Germany
and renamed Auschwitz.
