Compatible with:
The optional ML-L3 remote control (shown above) can be used for self-portraits or to reduce blur caused by camera shake. There are two settings that can be used with the ML-L3.
Shooting mode | Description |
Delayed remote | Gives operator time to pose when taking self-portrait using remote control. |
Quick-response remote | Ensures quick shutter response; can be used to reduce blurring caused by camera shake. |
When the ML-L3 remote control is used in M mode, users can select Bulb Mode and set '- -' as the Camera shutter speed. At this setting, the shutter opens when the shutter-release button on the optional ML-L3 remote control is pressed (2 seconds after the button is pressed in delayed remote mode) and remains open until the remote-control shutter-release button is pressed a second time (maximum exposure time is 30 minutes). Nikon recommends using a fully-charged EN-EL3 battery or an optional EH-5 AC adapter when using long exposures. For information regarding using the ML-L3 with flash please see the Cameras User manual.

Problems?
- We regularly receive complaints about the ML-L3 from Photographers who say it is faulty. Generally it is not. Here are three things
to check.
Drive
mode - The camera must be in the Self-timer/Remote
Control mode for the ML-L3 to operate. Some cameras have more than one
self-timer mode – you must use a mode with
the symbol of a remote control unit. Pressing the shutter button in this mode
gives you a 2 or 10-second self timer delay. Pressing the button on the ML-L3
fires the shutter immediately.
Auto Power - The ML-L3 will only
operate when the camera is switched on. If your camera automatically switches
off after 30 seconds without use – one of the settings on the ‘Auto power off’
menu – it does not give much time to move round to the front of the camera
and fire. Also The Camera will only stay active in remote control mode for a
few minutes without use , you can extend this to 15 mins using the menu
Line of sight - Infra-red devices normally need to see each other – often known as ‘line-of-sight’. Based on this, it would seem that you can only use the ML-L3 from in front of the camera, and you will find this quoted in some reviews. But it’s not strictly true. If you hold the ML-L3 a few inches above the shutter release, aiming down, the shutter will fire when you press the remote button – useful as an alternative to a remote switch. It will even operate from behind the camera if the infra-red beam is reflected back from a nearby surface . When aimed from the front of the camera the range is given as 5 metres, though this will vary with the surroundings. Infra-red devices can be affected by fluorescent lighting, but we have not experienced any problems.
