King Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette and the Continental Congress were presented these medals by Benjamin Franklin. This coin represents the American Victory of the REVOLUTIONARY WAR in 1781 and was the 1st coin ever minted to celebrate the victory. The obverse depicts a head of Liberty beneath the motto LIBERTAS AMERICANA, with the July 4, 1776 date below. This design was adopted onto the 1793 Liberty Cap Half Cent. The reverse displays Minerva, the Roman Goddess of wisdom and war, defending the infant United States(Hercules) from Britain(The Lion). The legend, NON SINE DIIS ANIMOUS INFANS, translates to "Not without the Gods is the infant courageous". The two dates in exergue represent the British surrendering at Saratoga on October 17, 1777, and at Yorktown on October 19, 1781.
