The Dalton Special is a legendary fishing lure with an intriguing backstory. Let’s dive into the details: Origin and Inventor: The Dalton Special was created by Phillip Porter Dalton, a passionate angler born in Kentucky on March 3, 1878. Phillip moved to Tampa, Florida, in 1917, where he continued his love for fishing.
Invention:
Frustrated with the artificial lures available on the market, Phillip decided to craft his own. He whittled wood until he came up with a design he believed would work. His prototype featured a painted wooden body with a spinner attached to the tail. Lake Okeechobee Discovery:
Phillip tested his homemade lure during a fishing trip to Lake Okeechobee. Despite skepticism from fellow anglers, the Dalton Special proved its worth. In just two hours, they landed an impressive 55 bass using Phillip’s invention.
Recognition and Patent:
The Tampa Tribune featured a photo of Phillip’s catch on March 13, 1938. Encouraged by this success, Phillip applied for a patent. On September 19, 1939, he was awarded Patent No. 116,678 for the Dalton Special.
Shakespeare Connection:
Shakespeare began producing Dalton Specials, but a falling out occurred in 1948 due to a price increase. In response, Shakespeare modified the lures, adding a cut under the chin. They renamed the bait the Shakespeare Special and sold it as their own brand.
The Dalton Special:
In 1949, Barracuda produced the famous Dalton Special, which was patented by P.P. Dalton. This lure was initially made by Shakespeare. The Dalton Special came in various sizes and was packaged in two-piece plastic boxes. The belly of these lures was marked “Tampa.” The address 2507 Bristol Ave, Tampa, Floridawas associated with Dalton’s home. Legacy:
The Dalton Special remained popular for a long time and is still cherished by collectors today. Although Barracuda Lures went through location changes (from Tampa to St. Pete and later Clearwater), their impact on fishing tackle history endures.
