Very interesting tribal mask here - hand carved & hand painted - a very bold look when displayed.

My own research on this mask has been limited, but it seems to be from Sri Lanka and could most likely be associated with the Kolam/Tovil rituals. (My understanding is that these masks were traditionally used to exorcise/cure various illnesses in their native culture.) Example:

The family history is that my late uncle, originally an ensign in the U.S. Navy during World War II, went into the service & ended up in the Pacific theater. Long story short: he ultimately sent this mask back home as a souvenir from some mysterious point unknown. (After some additional family research, my best guess would be that he acquired the mask around 1943.)

Paint is intact and not flaking - seeming "wear" damage is as shown. One ear is slightly wobbly. (Ear is intact & secured but does move a bit; no repair was attempted.) Both ears are held in place with (apparently) iron nails: two on one side, then three on the other... and that's all I know, save for the mask weighing a bit over a pound and measuring approximately 10 1/2" x 8 1/2" x 5".

All offers are seriously considered...
