1944 Press Photo Memorial on a German gun emplacement on the Normandy beachhead

This is an original press photo. Normandy: A column has been erected on a German gun emplacement on this Normandy beachhead where American GI's stormed ashore to begin the liberation of countries subjected by the German Army. On the wall of the cell beneath the column is a plaque bearing the inscription: "This German fortification was captured from the enemy and was used by the 1st Engineer Special Brigade as H.Q. from which to direct operations during the landing of American forces on this beach. On the walls of the emplacement are inscribed intended memory the names of our comrades who gave their lives to ensure freedom and justice throughout the world. Photo measures 7 x 8.75inches. Photo is dated 06-6-1944.
