The US military saw the success of German paratroopers in 1940, and quickly set about creating its own elite airborne units. US paratroopers jumped on Sicily in Operation Husky in 1943, and dropped into Normandy during the D-Day invasion in 1944. Those "devils in baggy pants" often used the M-1941 "mounted" canteen cover, as its "T" reinforced back allowed it to be tightly strapped down for a combat jump. This US Army WW2 D-DAY PARATROOPER AIRBORNE M-1941 MOUNTED KHAKI CANTEEN COVER is in good condition, with moderate tacky dark soiling at front, some whitish soiling at the middle front, some light tacky dark soiling at back, moderate patina to the wire hanger at the upper back, the number "2684" lightly hand marked in black at bottom, above what appears to be the letter "C" or "G" lightly stamped in black with the matching number "2684", and with some overall age wear evident (ALL pictured). Otherwise, the cover is in fine shape, with no other damage to the tough khaki canvas construction. Most interestingly, it's "U.S." stamped with serifs at front, sports a fully intact darkened metal wire hanger at the top of the classic "T" reinforced back, and is marked at the right back with its maker and date, "LUSTRE / 1943". It boasts fully functional darkened brass "lift-the-dot" closure flaps, and is a fine example of a rare, original US Army WW2 D-DAY PARATROOPER AIRBORNE M-1941 MOUNTED KHAKI CANTEEN COVER. No canteen or cup included. Now celebrating a quarter century on eBay. Buy with confidence and please view our other great military, aviation, and Old West classics, including a pair of very rare, original Antique 1920s OLD WEST COWBOY BRASS STUDDED LEATHER WRIST CUFFS in good condition, boasting an incredible diamond like design of large and small silvered brass studs at front, and sporting the original brown leather lacing along the upper backs.
