French Foreign Legionnaires in Indochina came from both the victorious Allies and the defeated Axis powers, and many were Eastern Europeans fleeing communism. Each man, for reasons known only to himself, left the past behind to vanish into the Legion and fight in the far off jungles of Southeast Asia. These reckless soldiers of fortune battled to the last man standing, for the Legion and for each other, in the forlorn, romantic episode that was French adventurism in Indochina. Many were issued the classic multi-stitch "cowboy" bush hat, which quickly became part of the iconic image of the hard bitten Legionnaire of "Indochine Francaise". In the 1980s, the legendary Banana Republic of Mill Valley, CA produced their own recreation of the classic French khaki bush hat. This Vintage BANANA REPUBLIC FRENCH FOREIGN LEGION INDOCHINA STYLE MULTI-STITCH BUSH HAT is in good condition, with a spot of dark soiling at the top right crown, some scattered "browning" and brownish soiling throughout, and with some overall age wear evident (ALL pictured). Otherwise, the hat is in fine shape, with absolutely no rips, holes, tears, or other damage to the tough khaki 100% cotton construction. Most interestingly, it's a Size Medium, boasts over 70 rows of concentric stitching in the classic multi-stitch design, and sports a fully functional darkened brass "glove" snap-up right brim. It features two darkened brass ventilation grommets at each side of the crown, exhibits the original knotted matching khaki cotton chinstrap, and bears the original "BANANA REPUBLIC / MILL VALLEY" 1980s "coat of bananas" maker's label inside. A fine example of a rare, original Vintage BANANA REPUBLIC FRENCH FOREIGN LEGION INDOCHINA STYLE MULTI-STITCH BUSH HAT.
