He is best known for having invented, well before Caesar, a new use of plastic. The Light Wall, his creation, is a translucent material once cooled into which, when hot, he has integrated abstract objects, honeycomb patterns, sorts of imagined air bubbles. It is very beautiful. François Chapuis died at the age of 70 from gases absorbed during his work.

François Chapuis is a painter, sculptor and master glassmaker born in 1928 in Nancy and died in 2002.

Author of stained glass windows for many churches, he participated in the revival of sacred art and religious architecture in the post-war period. Friend of Louis Debré and Sonia Delaunay, he is also part of the lyrical abstraction movement with Bazaine, Bissière and Manessier.

He is best known for being the inventor of the “light wall” in the 1960s.

The “light wall” is at once fresco, sculpture and stained glass window.

It is made up of large sheets of Plexiglas between which color pigments, simple geometric patterns and air bubbles are heat-integrated into resins.
