The older ones did not separate at the top, the newer ones do separate as you can see in the photo.
I have found they can be used interchangeable as far as 'use' goes, but the game directions may have you assembling the top as a step - so you can check your game's directions to see if that matters. As far as will it work, it will work fine.
When you select an item in the drop down, you get the pieces / type shown in the photo of the drop down.
