Rare Antique 18th Century Japanese Brass & Silver Scaphe Dial & Compass

This ornate antique scaphe dial was made in Japan in the late 18th or early 19th Century, features a hinged lid, and contains a compass. The outer case is silver with brass rims and a brass push-button clasp. The outside is chased with decorative patterns and a dragon in relief on the underside. There is a small silver carrying loop on the top. The compass is set into the lid of the instrument. The dial is marked with the unequal double hours of the Japanese time system.

The piece is in very good antique condition with some wear according to age. It is fully functional and the glass protecting the compass is intact. Measures approx. 1 3/4" in diameter x 1" high.
