The meaning of the words about the Buddha’s relics
"Phra Parama Sareerikathad" (Sarīrika Dhātu) in Thailand refers to relics which originated from the Lord Buddha,this term is not use for the relics of his disciples.
"Phra Thad" (Dhātu) refers to the bone or any part of the body such as hair, nail, teeth, skin, blood, etc. which are different to those of ordinary people. These relics resembles pebble, stone, glass, diamond, etc.
Normally, the word "Phra Parama Sareerikathad" has the same meaning as "Buddha's relics". And the term "Phra Thad" means "the Relics". Even though the word "Relics" is not limited to just the the physical appearances, It usage is slighty different in Thai.
The types of the Buddha's relics
Most of the Buddha relics are found to be different to the bone of the ordinary people. However, we have found certain Buddha's relics which looks the same as human bones from the Buddhist sanctuaries or museums in countries like Thailand, Sri Lanka and India. They can be divide into 2 main groups:
1. The Buddha’s relics which looked like Dhātu
These kind are found mainly in Thailand, Sri Lanka, China, Myanmar, etc. They are mentioned in the Tipitaka. In Thailand, they are placed in Buddhist sanctuaries of temples.
2. The Buddha's relics which looked like bone
These kind are found only in the ancient places in India. The British Government presented them twice to Thailand in the period of King Rama V, he was pleased to allocate them in the Golden Mount of Wat Sraket in Bangkok and the Chedi Sri Mahathat of Wat Phra Sri Mahathat, Bangkhen.
Characteristics of the Buddha's relics
These characteristics are observed and accepted by all Buddhists , they can be described as follows:
- found in various clarity and colors such as crystal clear or opaque, white like the conch shell, gold, black, pink, red, etc.
- found in different shapes which looks like rice grain, cabbage seed and broken bean , etc.
- The smaller ones will float when place in water and attract each another when float together.
- They can increase or decrease by themselves.
- Their colour and size can change by themselves.
- Most of them are lighter compared to ordinary stones of the same size.
The history of the arising of Buddha’s relics
The cause of arising of the Buddha’s relics was from the desire of our Lord Buddha before his Parinibbāna (the Great Decease of the Buddha).
Normally, the Buddha who lived a long life to settle the Buddhist Legend, had his own relics in a piece of natural golden bar, which could not be shared among the people in their Buddha period and could not be placed anywhere. Hence the construction of the Buddhist sanctuary was required to be done in one place only. Our present Lord Buddha (Sakyamuni Buddha) considered that his teaching period was only 45 years which he thought not too much compared with the previous Buddhas. He also thought that his instructions were not expanded enough and taught to those who were not yet born on time in his legend. Anyone who received his relics for respecting would get a lot of Puñña (the accumulation of good blessing, fortune or well-being) so he wished that his relics be scattered to all directions except 7 pieces (1 frontal bone, 4 teeth and 2 collarbones).
All of the above mentioned information was presented identically such as in the Sumaṅgalavilāsinī, Paṭhama Sambodhi Kathā by the Supreme Patriarch Kromphra Paramanujitajinorasa, Mulasāsanā Scripture, Jinakalamalipakaranam by Ven. Ratanapanna Thera and Phrachaolieplok Scripture.
Worship (Dhātu Pūjā)
The Buddha's relics are worthy of worship for historical, and religious reasons and should be respected highly. Anyone who owns them should keep them nicely.
How to perform worship
Prepare yourself by cleaning body and mind and preparing the container with jasmine wherever the Buddha's relics are. Lighting incense and candles and keep your mind calm and bow 3 times saying a prayer in Pali.

Further than the worship with fragment things one can worship by practicing well and with integrity which is the praised way by our Lord Buddha. In general, we normally do worship by practicing in Aṭṭhaṅgika-magga (the Noble Eightfold Path) as briefly:
1. Worship with Sīla (precepts) which is the basis of all good practicing as a protection against all bad things, no sadness and to be ready for further concentration such as Sammāvācā Sammākammanta Sammā-ājiva
2. Worship with Samādhi (concentration) which is the way to build up the strong mind of oneself to be able to consider dhamma rules as the way of existence such as Sammāvāyāma Sammāsati Sammāsamādhi
3. Worship with Pañña (wisdom) which is the way of Tilakkhaṇa (the 3 characteristics of existence) by using wisdom one's wisdom to consider the realities as per the 3 characteristics of existence such as Sammādiṭṭhi Sammāsaṅkappa
Furthermore, this relics worship can be used with the Anussati (Buddha's remembrance) as follows:
1. Buddhānussati (recollection of the Buddha; contemplation on the virtues of the Buddha)
:- after worshipping the relics, we should recollect the kindness of Lord Buddha
2. Dhammānussati (recollection of the Dhamma; contemplation on the virtues of the Doctrine)
:- after worshipping the relics, we should recollect the Dhamma achievement to transform normal bones into relics.
3. Saṅghānussati (recollection of the Sangha; contemplation on the virtues of the Order)
:- after worshipping the relics, we should recollect the kindness of the Sangha.
4. Sīlānussati (recollection of morality; contemplation on one’s own morals)
:- after worshipping the relics, we should recollect the Sīla achievement to transform normal bones into relics.
5. Cāgānussati (recollection of liberality; contemplation on one’s own liberality)
:- after worshipping the relics, we should recollect all donations we have made.
6. Devatānussati (recollection of deities; contemplation on the virtues which make people become gods as can be found in oneself)
:- after worshipping the relics, we should recollect how the Dhamma made normal people into devas or gods who protect relics.
7. Maraṇassati (mindfulness of death; contemplation on death)
:- after worshipping the relics, we should recollect about death which no one can run away from, even the Arahants.
8. Kāyagatā-sati (mindfulness occupied with the body; contemplation on the 32 impure parts of the body)
:- after worshipping the relics, we should recollect that our bodies are not beautiful for long. After death, they shall be only skeletons.
9. Upasamānussati (recollection of peace; contemplation on the virtues of Nibbāna)
:- after worshipping the relics, we should recollect Nibbana which has been achieved by all Arahants.
10. Ānāpānasati (mindfulness on breathing)
:- after worshipping the relics, we should bring our awareness to our in and out breathing.
