This is a project to replicate the one-off single seater racing car that was originally built by Rover engineers and subsequently raced in VSCC events for many years. This needs completion and I am just not finding the time. The detailed history of the original car is outlined in the attached article courtesy of Motorsport but briefly the car has a unique place in Rover history being used as an experimental mule for many of their developments before being campaigned across four decades by Frank Lockhart in vintage events. The original car survives and regularly appears at car shows.

The basis for this replica is a 1962 P4 Rover 110 and it comes with a V5 (period registration ‘TSL xxx’) so there is no issue with registration and it will of course be tax exempt. The chassis has been modified to include a de dion rear suspension sourced from a Rover P6, but here sprung with quarter elliptic springs rather than coil springs to replicate the racers suspension set up. The engine is a 2.6 litre straight six from a Rover P4 to replicate the originals power plant. So the project is very faithful to the original car and the Rover marque. The engine comes with a Borg Warner auto box but neither is properly mounted in the chassis as yet. This needs doing and a propshaft made once dimensions are known following engine mounting. The engine was stuck when I last tried to turn it but I haven’t made much effort to free it but I do know it was turning a few years ago so hopefully will free up with some oil soaking. I also have a Rover manual box (4 speed with overdrive) that will mount to this engine which you might prefer which is available by seperate negotiation. The original racer has a pre-selector box so the auto box might seem more appropriate in a way. You will need to fit a fuel tank and sort brakes and electrics to get a running vehicle. Finally the framework for the body has already been fitted to the chassis ready for panelwork which ideally should be in aluminium. The tail of the car comes to a sharp edge at the top which should make fabrication a bit easier, indeed apart from the nose of the car I don’t think there is much in the way of compound curves. The nose could always be done in fiberglass to make life simpler.
