One of two similar instruments that I presently have available on eBay, this fine quality brass-bound stereo graphoscope dates to the late Victorian era and is suitable for viewing glass and card stereo photographs in three dimensions, and postcards or Cartes Postales when using the larger 7" diameter viewing lens.

This superb instrument comprises a hinged viewing platform supported by a fretwork stand, a swing out frame housing a magnifying lens with twin eyepieces below. It is particularly well-suited for viewing glass stereopositives, with hinged flaps forming a darkened enclosure to reduce light ingress, greatly improving the clarity of the viewed image.  This sophisticated arrangement is only seen on the more expensive stereo graphoscopes.  The viewing platform can be set to three different angles according to the individual needs of the user.  When viewing Carte Postales, the image is placed in the groove provided, with the slide carrier being moved backwards and forwards to achieve precise focusing.  For stereowork, the subject is placed in the groove and the slide carrier brought right up against the enclosed viewing chamber.  Then, fine focusing is achieved by adjusting the twin turnscrews to each side, these operating a rack and pinion which moves the eyepieces backwards and forwards.  Card-backed stereoviews can also be used, with the hinged and mirrored flap opening to allow light to enter through the top of the viewing chamber.  The entire instrument folds flat for ease of storage when not in use.

This instrument delivers an astonishing three dimensional effect which really brings history to life.

This large example measures 40cm by 23cm, standing 61cm high when in use.  It folds down to 10cm when not in use.  The magnifying lens is 7" in diameter.  The stereocard measures 9cm x 18cm.

Condition:  The instrument is finished in a beautiful close-grained veneer which retains its original French Polish, still with excellent  colour and shine, despite its considerable 150 years or more of age.  There are minor scuffs and scratches consistent with age and use.  The decorative metalwork is all in order, slightly tarnished.  All lenses are in good condition with only very minor surface marks.  The focusing adjustment operates correctly, without slippage to the rack and pinion.  One of the turned wooden eyepieces has a shrinkage split, as photographed.  There are edge losses to one of the grooves into which the enclosed viewing chamber is assembled (11th & 12th images, barely noticeable, performance unaffected).
