A well-executed model of a steam drifter of the type that were once found in their thousands at ports along the East coast of Scotland and England and were used for catching herring by means of huge drift nets.  These steam-driven vessels were first introduced in the 1880s with many still being in operation until the early 1960s at which time the dramatic depletion of fish stocks resulted in the near total collapse of the British herring industry.  Typically, these vessels were of wooden construction and were around 80-100ft in length. The black and white image (web-sourced, not this actual vessel) shows a steam drifter of typical form.

This particular model, BK217 'Guiding Light' has been beautifully made with hand-crafted wooden elements to the superstructure.  Being an older model it has a tremendous sense of age and makes for a fine display piece.  The BK prefix relates to the border-town port of Berwick upon Tweed.  Length 75cm, beam 13cm, overall height including stand 42cm.  Unknown age.  Please note that this is a display piece and not a working model for remote control.  The hull appears to be preformed in either glass reinforced fibre or heavy duty plastic, the superstructure is made from wood.

Condition: Structurally sound but with some age-related discoloration of the paintwork, dust residue etc.
