A little History :

As for the representation of René Magritte’s L’oiseau de ciel on the tableware, its use predates the last decade of the 20th century. During the 1960s, the Director of Sabena Airlines, Gilbert Périer ( 1902 - 1968 ), wanted to link the company’s image to a great Belgian painter. Contact was made with René Magritte in December 1965, in order to commission a work from him. This was delivered three months later. The image of L’oiseau de ciel was used for all adjoining advertising : posters, labels, leaflets, etc... until 1973. The said year was the 50th Anniversary of Sabena Airlines, which chose new advertising symbols for the occasion. Nevertheless, L’oiseau de ciel did not disappear from radar screens of the Belgian national airline, as the porcelain service presented here demonstrates.
