For your consideration is this late Victorian era (c.1880’s) RARE Dring & Fage signed compound microscope in case w/ slides, objectives and accessories.

Dring & Fage of London were well-known for the production of scientific equipment, but mainly hydrometers, saccarimeters, wantage rules etc. Finding a high quality microscope originating from them is like finding a needle in a haystack. It’s very RARE! To my knowledge, neither the Billings collection nor the R.M.S. collection has ONE.

Features:

• Chemically darkened and bright lacquered brass

• Extends 14 ¾” to 18 ¾”, reclines to 180 degrees

• Durable & sturdy horseshoe base, signed Dring&Fage London, with feet spreading in front

• Rear vertical pillar fine focus motion

• Top (fancy) and Lower tables moving forward and side to side, upper table also spins

• One ocular

• Three signed and housed Dring & Fage London objectives – 1/8, 1/4, 1”

• One pocket microscope- functions ok but glass could be clearer

• Double mirror – one side extremely fine, one side has a age spot

• Diaphragm below table allows you to adjust for some light, no light, or more light.

• Dring & Fage London signed case with drawers, tools, slides, & accessories (see condition below).

Condition:

• Case is in FAIR condition (see photos). A significant crack to back of case has been repaired at some point. Both drawer faces appear to have been repaired. The lock has been removed and there is no key.

• Microscope is in excellent mechanical condition. Ocular and objective glass like new. Lacquered brass has normal age wear. Chemically darkened brass in nice shape with minor, light scratches.

• Slides- about half have been used long ago which is kind of cool.

• Tools- most in the box seem to be related to dissection. One is a later Hamilton Bell Company tool.

• Accessories- see photo, a small tin case “The Grip” drawing pins has slide covers inside. I have never seen or heard of this English company nor ever seen this tin-cool, lots of wear. A couple corked antique test tubes? and a couple small, loose parts.
