DatedBerlin-Zehlendorf, House of the Aviators, 7. March 1942. -- In the Berlin address book of 1942 she is listed as a painter (under the address Claszeile 7). In the "House of Airmen" there was possibly her studio?
addressed to a Mr. Althaus, probably the Perleberg lawyer Karl Althaus (1886-1956). Apparently a picture of one of the family members, possibly wife Marie Althaus, b. Niese (*1892), daughter of the Perleberg superintendent Ewald Niese? In the "Art Exhibition of the General Government" (31. October - 15 December 1942 in the Cloth Hall in Kraków) Margarete Schneefus is, among other things, with a "Portrait of Mrs. A." represent; it could be in this picture.
Transcription: "Dear Mr. Althaus. Warmest regards to your dear wife and you on Sunday - the picture is doing well - every day is dedicated to the picture - nevertheless it is not finished yet - thank you for both letters - and your empathy. That's good - I need this unlimited rest - because I myself can't know when it will be over. I live entirely in the studio and live with the picture - it matures... Tires need rain and sunshine. That's how it is with my work – up and down – in matching the background and selecting. – The face stands and stays good. I listen to your wishes - it should and will happen - it's nice that you understand and give me peace of mind -.
With joy I expect the hero's two parents on March 21/22. – Yes, this is where you should receive the picture. The framework should come next week, which I then have to coordinate. I would also very much like to have a reproduction made - I'm sorry that you still have to wait and then have to travel to Berlin so shortly before the Feast of Confirmation - But it's better that way. Thank you. It's also cold enough to travel. With deepest sympathy, your Margarete Schneefus."
