Antique SNELL & ATHERTON, O.E.D. 3 Curved Leather Shoe Heel Shaver / Spoke Shave. Varanes Snell and Atherton (first name unknown) went into business in 1853 in North Bridgewater (Brockton). Mass. Snell was awarded Patent 20,960 on July, 1858 for his "Heel Shaver for Boots & Shoes". His patent was described as an "Improvement to facilitate sharpening the shave knife by use of a removeable guard that allows access to the blade without having to remove it." This guard is also adjustable and can be used to open and close the mouth. This heel shave is marked with the maker’s name on the outside surface of the blade, along with O E D 3. Also, the underside of one handle is embossed '3', and the opposite handle has their 'STAR' logo.
