HANDWRITTEN NOTE by "GONE with the WIND" AUTHOR, MARGARET MITCHELL.

The note, which was written on the reverse side of a Confederate Georgia $5 bill, is dated July 21,1936 has been framed and preserved under glass.

The note reads, "To Edwin Granberry with lots of thanks. Margaret Mitchell".

Edwin Granberry (1897~1988), to whom the note of thanks was addressed, was a novelist and freelance book reviewer and critic for the New York Evening Sun newspaper.

Granberry's most notable review was a glowing and unprecedented 1,200 word piece about the then newly published novel "Gone with the Wind".

The article appeared in the New York Evening Sun newspaper on Tuesday June 30, 1936.

Margaret Mitchell was so impressed with Grandberry's review, in which he compared her book to Tolstoy's "War and Peace", that it sparked a lifetime friendship between the two and convinced Margaret Mitchell to accept an offer of $50,000 for the movie rights to her book with producer David O. Selznick.

The movie was released in 1939 and, in 1940, "Gone with the Wind" won a total of 8 Academy Awards including the highly coveted best picture award.

The film's monumental success extended beyond the awards as it became a massive box office hit.

We recently purchased this historical artifact, among several others, from the Central Florida estate of Edwin Granberry, Jr., the newspaper critic's eldest son who passed away on August 8, 2023 at the age of 96.
