These replicas of the medieval chess pieces from the Scottish island of Lewis are among the most popular sets. They give us fascinating insights into the international connections of western Scotland and the growing popularity of chess in medieval Europe.
The chess pieces in this listing are replicas of part of a large hoard buried on Lewis. The hoard contained 93 gaming pieces in total, including from at least four chess sets as well as from other games. The original chess pieces were probably made in the late 12th or early 13th century in Norway.
PLEASE NOTE: The 3D printed chess board is NOT INCLUDED. It is just present to help show the scale and size of the pieces. Please see my separate listing if you wish to purchase a chess board.
