This and all of the great Vintage Peanut Butter Glasses we will be listing over the next few months are all from the collection of a very serious, adult collector and have remained in their collection until now!! These are all made in the 1950's (as far as we know). The particular glass you are looking at is:
Pattern: Spring Crocus
Made By: Boscul
Color Variation: White Flower With yellow accents & Green Stems
Font: Script
Font Color: White
Font Location: Angeled Label, just below the leaves
Nice glass in our opinion!! No breaks or chips in the glass and the colors are vibrant and not faded. No scratches or anything that we can see. Please be sure to see all the high resolution photos. We use several different colored background & insert combinations to accurately show you the fine details & true colors of this glass. Please see all photos & use your own judgment on condition.
These glasses are a fun item to collect and a must have for any lover of Swanky Swig, Peanut Butter Glasses, or Jelly Jars!!
PLEASE SEE ALL PHOTOS BEFORE BIDDING!!!
These beautiful decorated glasses were made throughout the 1950's. The most popular one being a company called Boscul. These wonderfully colorful glasses were a fantastic advertising gimmick made by glass companies for other companies to sell commercially produced peanut butter. The images on the glasses were done in a silk screen which was then replaced with brass screens early on, ACL (Applied Ceramic Labeling). The ACL silk screening process is where the paints are applied directly to the glass and then cured at very high temperatures. This allows the paints to bond to the glass resulting in a permanent label that is scratch and water resistant. The images varied by company but were usually flowers, dogs, birds, and specialty images like college logos and other limited designs. Other known companies were Big Top, Shedds, Swift, Armour, Velvet, Monarch, Blue Plate, Norris, Goody-Goody, and more. It is currently believed that there are over 1000 different designs (if you include all of the colors and variations of fonts, placement, ect.) that were made and every now and then a new variant is found hidden in some dark corner somewhere according to an expert that I just recently had the pleasure of having a conversation with about Peanut Butter Glasses. Most of the designs or patterns were identified with an ACL label such as the name of the flower or dog depicted on these beautiful glasses. These "labels" can be found in different fonts, colors, locations on the glass, angle, and even a mysterious "DOT" that can sometimes be found just under the name label. It is unknown as to why this "dot" is there as someone would have had to physically and intentionally put a small pin hole in the silk screen in order for the paint to transfer through to the glass. This style of glass or "tumbler" was made in 3 general sizes and 1 extremely rare size. I believe, Juice Glasses, Water Glasses, and Tea Glasses and the rarest being a 5 1/2" glass which there are only 10 known. They were manufactured by a few companies but most notably by Boscul Peanut Butter by William Scull Co, Inc. (Camden New Jersey). The peanut butter was packed into the glass then topped with a flip top or pry off top cap. Once the peanut butter was gone, the glasses were meant to be kept and used as a drinking glass, thus adding extra value to the consumer. A special thanks to John Carpenter and Dave Greyson for sharing their knowledge with us!!
