Kingdom of Romania medal, 1912, to commemorate the monument in Craiova for the war of 1877-78.

This scarce medal (of bronze, 33 mm in diameter, and designed by Carnio Fiul) was struck to commemorate the erection in Craiova in 1912 of the monument in memory of the war of 1877-78.

Obverse, the head and shoulders of King Carol I and Queen Elisabeta.  Surrounding the central image are the words:

CAROL  I  DOMN  ŞI  PRIMUL  REGE  AL  ROMANIEI  ELISAVETA  REGINA   ŞI  MAMA  RĂNIŢILOR;

(CAROL  I  PRINCE  AND  FIRST  KING  OF  ROMANIA  ELISABETH  QUEEN  AND  MOTHER  OF  THE  WOUNDED).

Reverse, an image of the monument at Craiova with the words IN  AMINTIREA  RĂZBOIULUI   DIN  1877-1878  (IN  MEMORY  OF  THE WAR  OF  1877-1878).

The monument was erected in Bibescu (now Romanescu) Park.  The statue consisted of a pedestal upon which there was a bronze statue of Carol I and a base with two bronze canons and seven bronze statues of soldiers and officers.

The monument was dismantled by the Communist authorities after their rise to power in 1948.
