Description:

Lovely Art Nouveau Hand Painted Porcelain Brooch Purple Violet Flowers with gold guilding.

Brass backing, C-Catch closure, Victorian late 1800s.

I've always liked these painted porcelain brooches. They were painted during the Victorian and Edwardian periods, usually by artistic females. They are little works of wearable art, and most were not signed.

A lovely piece to add to an antique collection or in a display of Victoriana.

The "C" Catch, or c-clasp, were simple bends of metal shaped like the letter C.  The pin was kept within the C with tension created by the pin against the fabric to which it was attached. Some pins were held in place by pressure of a bend in the pin, which pressed against the C. This type of catch was not very secure because the pin could slip out of the C. C catches are generally always hand-made. A C catch of some type was in use from about 1850 to 1910.
