Cats in art

Whilst dogs represent fidelity, cats may be symbolic of sensuality and seduction. The connotations of their pose may represent a wide variety of feelings, from wild pursuits to calm domestic comforts

Artists tend to spend long stretches of time alone so they can stay focused on their work. Many artists do this while locked away in a studio. Cats bring a certain energy to a space, but they're generally independent creatures. This makes them the perfect companion for the artist

Van Gogh painted a final version of Daubigny's Garden with a cat in the foreground but the cat was painted over after Van Gogh died. This painting can be visited in the Hiroshima Museum of Art

Working as a freelance children's book illustrator, Andy Warhol painted his feline companions in his spare time before casting them in a book of his own. In 1954, Warhol published a book of his cats accompanied by Julia's calligraphy.

Louis Wain was an English artist born in 1860 who solely painted cats. His struggles with mental illness influenced his artwork and his life. Louis Wain is known for his anthropomorphic cats that he dedicated his creative career to drawing and painting.

Among the many catsLeonardo Da Vinci kept, there was one whose name we don't know that he studied closely, observing in his notes the contractions of its pupils and the agility of its limbs.” She later quotes a bumper sticker-suited one-liner attributed to Leonardo: Even the smallest feline is a masterpiece of nature.

Here are some superb paintings by the Austrian painter Gustav Klimt depicting beautiful cats. The felines are painted in the symbolist art nouveau style, characteristic of Klimt's works. Cat lovers have found the ideal gift idea for a birthday or the holiday season

Pablo Picasso

Picasso didn't paint cuddly kittens, but his work does include a painting of a cat in action in Cat Catching a Bird. This painting illustrates cats in their natural, sometimes vicious state and reminds us to do our best to keep birds out of their eager claws
