Mack Allen Smith was born in Carroll County, Mississippi, on October 20, 1938. He was exposed to Country and Blues music at an early age:on one side of the railroad tracks, one could hear country and western music coming from the cafes where the white folks were drinking beer. On the other side of the railroad tracks, one could hear rhythm and blues music coming from the cafes where the black people were drinking beer. Mack Allen Smith music is blues infused: Local blues legend John Hurt used to informally play at Smith’s uncle’s repair shop when he was young! He was raised on blues:

B.B.King from Indianola, Elvis early Sun recordings inspired him to become a Rock-a-billy singer with his own bluesy Delta sound.

In 1954, while in high school, Mack Allen became lead singer in his first band (The J. Z. George FFA Band) After graduating from high school in 1956, Mack Allen joined the Kenny Minyard band as lead singer.Prior to leaving for college, Mack Allen formed a band called The Carroll Country Rock & Roll Boys and  after entering college in September 1956, Mack Allen changed the name of the band to Mack Allen Smith and the Flames. They performed on weekends at the 51 Club in Durant, Mississippi, and the VFW in Kosciusko and Greenwood, Mississippi. Also in 1956 Mack Allen Smith had a show in the Ball Park in Greenwood with Sun recording stars. in January 1957, Mack Allen joined the Marines and left for a 2 year tour of duty in California, where he often performed in the weekend at the USO Club in Ocean Side and with a Black band at the Figure-Eight Club in L.A.

In January 1959, Mack Allen returned to Carrollton, MS and re-formed Mack Allen Smith and the Flames.

He recorded 3 songs (Kansas City, Mean Woman Blues, and Sandy Lee) for producer Ernie Barton at Sun Records in 1959; however, Mr. Barton left Sun Records shortly thereafter and the 1959 Sun recordings disappeared! In 1960 Warren Smith joined Mack Allen and his band for a few months.

Mack Allen Smith and the Flames performed until October 1984 throughout Mississippi and surrounding states. He owned his own nightclub (Mack Allen Smith's Town & Country Night Club) in Greenwood, MS from (1971-1976)

BOOKS His first novel entitled Honky-Tonk Addict was published in 1993, followed by Looking Back One Last Time in 2004 and Rock-a-billy Rebel in 2012 based on his 60+ years career as a honky-tonk singer/writer/recording artist, and the numerous singers, musicians, and writers he has known and shared a stage with during this period. To quote Mack, "My objective was to write a book that was different from others I had read in this genre. The ones I'd read were about singers, musicians. My goal was to write about people I'd known and shared a stage with, or at least knew them personally and had first hand knowledge of their careers in music”.
