The Jaguar E-type, celebrated as one of the most iconic sports cars of all time, is renowned primarily for its stunning beauty. Enzo Ferrari famously called it “the most beautiful car ever made,” and it continues to top lists of the most beautiful cars globally. However, the E-type is far more than just an aesthetic marvel. Debuting at the Geneva Auto Show in 1961, it was among the most technologically advanced cars of its era. Its sleek silhouette, crafted by the ingenious aerodynamicist Malcolm Sayer, was designed using mathematical formulas to enhance its aerodynamic efficiency. This made the E-type a true cutting-edge vehicle of its time. Beneath its elegant exterior, it featured a fully independent rear suspension, which was rare then, and a 3.8-liter straight-six engine that had already proven its prowess in D-type race cars at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1955, 1956, and 1957. The result was a nimble yet comfortable car, effortlessly capable of reaching triple-digit speeds. In 1964, the engine was upgraded to a 4.2-liter straight-six, and in 1971, a 5.3-liter V12 was introduced.

The E-type's advanced suspension, race-bred engine, and innovative chassis made it an excellent race car, and it quickly found success on the track. On April 3, 1961, Sir Graham Hill triumphed over rivals like Aston Martin and Ferrari at the Oulton Park circuit. E-types soon became a common sight on tracks across Europe and North America, competing well into the 1970s.

Throughout its 14-year production run, the E-type saw minor updates through three different series. Coupes, roadsters, and two-plus-two layouts all varied the basic E-type formula but remained true to its breathtaking silhouette. Over 72,000 E-types were produced before production ended in early 1975.

The E-type remains the most iconic car in Jaguar’s storied history and is enshrined as one of the greatest and most important cars ever made.
