The magnificent blooms of the Amaryllis, also known as the Hippeastrum, are unequalled in the plant world. The plants are particularly valued as pot plants, and home gardeners can easily force the bulbs for out-of-season blooms indoors.

The huge flowers bloom atop tall, sturdy stems, opening like colourful trumpets.

They also make extremely striking garden subjects when planted outdoors in a sunny or lightly shaded position after the last frosts. The tropical beauties are eager to bloom, and within weeks of planting, the flowers begin to open.

Hippeastrums primary requirement is a well-drained growing medium, they do extremely well in pots.

Although the red Amaryllis is most common, gardeners can enjoy these plants in a range of rare and unusual colours.

Amaryllis bulbs can be saved during dormancy and will re-bloom reliably every year.

These bulbs were source from an avid Hippeastrum collector of over 50 years and they're all named varieties that unfortunately got mixed up. You could end up with a common variety or something extremely rare and special.

Indoor potting – ideal planting times, September to December.

Outdoor planting – autumn

Leave the top ⅓ of each bulb protruding above the soil. 

Water only once per week, even in dry spells, as over-watering will cause stem rot and red rust. Never water over the bulb nose – go around the sides instead.
