Charming Antique small stool covered with a beautiful floral embroidery or crewel work textile panel in the style of William Morris or the works of his daughter May Morris. The stool is very simple, oak sides and some sort of board on which the fabric is stretched over. With decorating brown upholstery trim on the sides to cover the border lines. I am not an expert on textiles, but this embroidered panel resembled many of the fabric designs created by May Morris, which I've seen when visiting the Morris museum in North London or William Morris's house Kelmscott Manor in in the Cotswolds. I think the threads are wool over a linen backing fabric. Originally the colours must have been quite striking with different shades of blue, green, brown, red/orange, but have slightly faded now. Very elaborately designed large flowers on a stem. In the Arts and Crafts style. Mary "May" Morris (1862-1938) was the younger daughter of William Morris, who was a talented fabric and embroidery designer/artist and craftswoman. She was later in charge of the embroidery department of Morris and Co.
I do not know if during late 19th or early 20th Century the Morris and Co company would have supplied ready made embroidery kits to department stores like Liberty and others in London and one would have bought a kit to make this tool. It probably needs more research.
Probably dating to the late 19th or early 20th Century, English.

Size: the stool measures ~ 25.5 x 25 cm, about 9.5 cm high.

Condition: The stool is in antique condition. The base fabric has darkened with age, stained, some spot with candle wax, wear in the corners. The woolwork threads have faded, but still different colours are visible. No damage to the threads. The wooden parts may have been darker colour, some black stains. Signs of wear. Any questions, please enquire.
