This listing is for an oil painting by Canadian artist Dorothy Barter that features a fall season river and old bridge.

Dorothy Burton Barter lived 1918-2003. She grew up on a farm in the New Richmond area of the Gaspe Peninsula, Quebec. In 1937 she married the local school teacher, Jamie Barter, and soon after moved to Portage du Fort, but when her husband won a competition to work in the Federal Government, they moved to Ottawa. They had two children and Dorothy was a homemaker while her children were growing up. When her son started to attend school full-time, she worked as a salesclerk in downtown Ottawa.

From an early age, Dorothy was interested in crafts and creating – from hooking mats, shell work, quilting sewing, tailoring, smocking, knitting, crocheting, etc. In her later years, she took up painting eventually concentrating on oil painting done predominately on stretched canvas. She was mostly self-taught but did attend some night school and daytime art classes and enjoyed this pastime until 2003 when she passed away in Ottawa.
