Německá Luftwaffe zadala firmě Focke Wulf v roce 1942 vývoj výškové stíhačky. Konstruktér K. Tank se rozhodl upravit standardni Fw 190A pro motor DB 603. Prvním takto upraveným strojem se stal 29. kus prototypové série. Byl označen V-13 a stal se prvním prototypem verze Fw 190C.
Vývoj postupoval dále, na prototypech V-15 a V-16 byly testovány další možné řešení. V-15 dostal dlouhá výfuková potrubí vyvedená až za odtokovou hranu křídla. V-16 vypadal podobně, výfuky byly ale klasické a na levé straně přide přibyl nasavač. Vývoj vyvrcholil prototypem V-18 s turbokompresorem.
Právě potíže s turbokompresory a přetlakováním kabiny vedly k ukončení vývoje.
Výsledky byly použity při vývoji Fw 190D a Ta 152.
In 1942, the German Luftwaffe commissioned the Focke Wulf company to develop a high-altitude fighter. The designer K. Tank decided to modify the standard Fw 190A for the DB 603 engine. The first machine to be modified in this way was the 29th piece of the prototype series. It was designated V-13 and became the first prototype of the Fw 190C version.
The development continued, with further possible solutions being tested on the V-15 and V-16 prototypes. The V-15 received long exhaust pipes that extended beyond the trailing edge of the wing. The V-16 looked similar, but the exhausts were classic and an intake was added on the left side. The development culminated with the V-18 prototype with a turbocharger.
It was precisely the problems with turbochargers and cabin pressurization that led to the termination of development.
The results were used in the development of the Fw 190D and Ta 152.
