Miraculous Medals - "Mary's Medal"
In 1830 France, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to a nun, St. Catherine Laboure, and showed her the front and back of a medal. During the apparition, Mary said, "Have a medal made based on this medal. All those who wear it will receive graces."
Around Mary were words written in gold: "O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee." On the reverse side of the Miraculous Medal, the letter "M" is crowned with a cross, representing Mary's closeness with Jesus, her part in our salvation, and her role as Mother of the Church. Twelve stars recall the vision of Saint John, writer of the Book of Revelation (12:1), in which a great sign appeared in heaven, a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of 12 stars. The Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary represent the love of Jesus for us.
