One of the first games for the AES system, it would be all too easy to dismiss this game as being old and not worth buying but in my opinion that would be a huge mistake: Ghost Pilots is basically a vertical WWII, 1943-style game on some pretty powerful, possibly banned, steroids. It was never one of my favourite games (I preferred ASO II back in the day) and I got the feeling that SNK were really just showing off with this one. The graphics were incredibly lush and super detailed and the music was even more lush, if that's something you can say that about music. It was like they just sampled a 48-piece brass band and used it as the background music to show off what the sound chip could do. Very impressive, but all these graphics and sounds were like birthday money meeting sweet shop for me: half an hour later I had a bit of a headache and needed a lie down. The funny thing is that I've grown more and more fond of the game over the years and it sure makes a mockery of Video System's puny, pathetic and dull Sonic Wings 2 and 3 games! 55 meg for Ghost Pilots and 154 meg for Sonic Wings 3... either they got that the wrong way round or Video System filled up about 130 megs by repeating the words "We are dull and boring" over and over again and putting the text onto to the ROM chips. Maybe you get to see that if you finish those games, but I've always fallen asleep by about level 2. Back in the mid-late 90s, we used to sell about 3 Sonic Wings games for every copy of Ghost Pilots we sold, so excuse the rant but I really do think people need educating here. Anyway, if you're not into all this political Neo Geo one-upmanship with expensive games, basically if you like Capcom's 1941, 1942, 1943 Kai, 19XX, 1944 games, then here's a game to put on your list!
