This is a Byzantine (Greek Orthodox) icon: Theotokos (Mother of God) Enthroned, surrounded by figures  in  the "Root of Jesse" motif, with an intricate hammered sterling silver grade oklad (silver metal cover) set upon rough antiqued wood and all ready for wall mounting. The outside dimensions of the piece measure 10 by 12 1/2", the center panel 10 1/4 by 7 3/4"; the artwork looks to be hand painted tempera effect on fine canvas or paper, with the Virgin and Child depicted in the center, surrounded by 14 miniature figures representing the ancestry of Jesus.

The title in Greek lettering may be read on the top center, also numerals 999 and what looks to be an eagle trademark or logos on the lower left corner. The beaten silver oklad depicts a Eucharistic theme of grape clusters and vines and the names of the various figures are inscribed as titles in Greek on the metal portion. There is a Certificate of Authenticity on the reverse bottom with text in five languages: Greek, English, French, Italian and German, indicating that the (H)agiographical coloration- (that is, the colors in which the various Old Testament 'saints' were portrayed),  is authentic, and that the metal covering is in 925 (sterling) grade silver (see photo #10). Made for export, most likely from Greece, and probably crafted within the last 25 years, I am grading the piece in Very Fine Condition,  excepting what looks like a bit of wax staining effect on the certificate on the reverse, and the intentional antiquing on the 7/8" thick stained hardwood frame. There is a little crackling effect to the paintwork in places, probably intentional, and the piece has an over-all look of age to it-an unusual piece of contemporary Greek Orthodox Iconography.
