NG Dev Team's latest title, converted from the newly released Neo Geo MVS arcade to Dreamcast.
Neo XYX is pure 16-Bit goodness. While it's surely the NG:Dev.Team's finest game yet, there's something else going on which is maybe more important: it feels much more like a Japanese-developed game. To be fair to their previous games, I don't think they even tried to make them feel in any way Japanese. They were what they were and you were either fine with that or you weren't. Gunlord for example was obviously massively inspired by Turrican, which was not a Japanese game. Neo XYX is obviously inspired by Toaplan's games: there's a definite flavour of Tatsujin and the later games like Grindstormer / V. V., Dogyuun and Batsugun in the way Neo XYX looks and feels. Not a rip-off of their games my any means but the overall feel is strong enough so that if you saw the game running and didn't know what it was, somebody may well be able to trick you into believing it was a previously unreleased Toaplan game. I've said previously that Bullet Soul on the 360 has a flavour of what might be a modern Toaplan game, if the company still existed, it but Neo XYX just looks like one they made and hid away! There are a lot of people out there who can't get on with any shooter developed outside of Japan. I used to count myself as one of them until a few years ago when I caught myself unexpectedly loving Fast Striker. But Neo XYX I genuinely feel would win over people who can only play Japanese shooters.
Aside from all that, it's a class game. Great action, great sounds. Pure mid-late '90s arcade action. I genuinely love it. Thank you, NG:Dev.Team.
