Nelumbo nucifera - The Sacred Lotus
This listing is for 5 large seeds of this unusual aquatic plant.
Sacred Lotus is a water plant that shares many features in common with the water lily but is not closely related to it in any way (other than it is an aquatic). It is native to Tropical Asia and Queensland, Australia. It grows from a string of rhizomes in the bed of the river or lake in which it resides. The leaves grow up to 1.5 metres tall and can either float on the surface or stand proud of the water, all depending upon the depth it is growing at. Overall the plant can achieve a spread of up to 3 metres. Individual leaves can be up to 60 cm across and the large and showing blush pink flowers can be 20 cm or more across.
Plants can live for several hundred years and viable seeds have been germinated when over 1200 years old, such is the tenacity of this plant. It is revered in many cultures, hence the common name Sacred Lotus.
The seed heads when dried are used in flower arranging. The flowers young leaves, seeds and roots are all edible and used in Asian cuisine. All parts of the plant are used in traditional medicine, including the fruit and seeds.
Easy from seed, it should flower in its second year. It does not require a pond and can be grown in containers and under cover to allow for growing and planting all year round. It is hardy in Zones 5 and up.
