Cycas siamensis - Living Fossil - Seeds

Cycas siamensis - Living Fossil - Seeds

This is a listing for seeds of this unusual and fairly rare cycad species, although it was once quite common before it was over harvested as a medicinal and food plant.

Cycas siamensis is a species of Cycad endemic to Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam. Not particulalry common, it grows in the understory of the both tropical and sub-tropical forests.  It's leaves are quite large and the fronds not as coarse as some of the other species, leading to an almost feathery look.

Like all Cycads, it is a living fossil, a remanant of time before flowering plants had evolved and Dinosaurs ruled the Earth.  Like all cycads it has male and female plants and to get seeds you will need at least one of each.  It is easy to germinate and grow on, not as hardy as Cycas revoluta, it will need winter shelter if grown outside in the warmer months as it will not withstand much frost.  It will produce 2 leaves in its first year and 3 or 4 a year thereafter until a full crown and trunk develops.  At that point each year it will provide a fresh flush of leaves at the start of each proper growing season and from 7 or 8 years old it will bear seeds (if female).

Expensive to import, we give you the option to buy the number of seeds you require offering it in packs of up to 5 seeds.
