( Royal Navy)

Connell, G.G.

Item Description: Amassing the recollections of many Royal Navy seamen and Petty officers of WW II, the author has fashioned a narrative illustrating what war at sea was like for the average sailor, besides describing living conditions, jobs, liberty, etc, new light is shed on many actions as seen by the average sailor. London , 1985 William Kimber , first UK edition, VG/VG condition , 6x9, 236 pp, illus, maps

Ordinary seamen far outnumber their officers, yet most navel books are written from the officers' standpoint. In a wide variety of reminiscences the author reconstructs the matelot's life, whether in corvette, battleship or destroyer, of whether as Royal Navy, Reservist, RNVR or Hostilities Only; he writes both of the pleasures of shipboard life and of the often-harsh discipline meted out for lapses from the navel code. Throughout the book he links the experiences of the seamen to the great actions of the war taking place around them, which are thus seen not from the viewpoint of the captain or admiral but the men who fired the guns, the engineers, etc. Thus we get new perspectives on the Battle of the River plate, Convoy PQ17, the invasion of Sicily, the Battle of Sirte, and many other actions. G.G. Connell, the author of Fighting Destroyer and other books of naval history, was himself an RNVR seaman before and during the war, later becoming an officer, with experience in many different classes of ships including destroyers, cruisers and battleships

INTERNATIONAL POSTAGE NOTICE  !

AS OF MAY 14th, 2007, THE US POSTAL SYSTEM HAS COMPLETELY CHANGED  INTERNATIONAL MAIL RATES - ALL SURFACE MAIL HAS BEEN DROPPED, THERE WILL ONLY BE TWO  CLASSES OF AIR MAIL= PRIORITY  OR FIRST CLASS.

Due to increasingly higher postal rates, and the many packages that seem to be lost on International Mail, we now only will ship internationally via E-Bay’s Global shipping program, which goes by courier services.

Import duties, taxes, and charges are NOT INCLUDED in the item price or shipping charges. These charges are the buyer's responsibility. Please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to bidding / buying. These charges are normally collected by the delivering freight (shipping) company or when you pick the item up. Do not confuse them for additional shipping charges. We do not mark merchandise values below value or mark items as "gifts". U.S. and International government regulations prohibit such behavior.

VINTAGE PAPERBACK BOOKS

Please be aware that the binding glue in vintage paperbacks is likely to be much drier than newer books, and thus more fragile than more modern printings. Paper also can be sometimes somewhat brittle.

All vintage paperbacks require proper & careful care in handling & reading or the spine glue will crack !!.

SHIPPING TIMES

WE HAVE NO IDEA HOW FAST THESE NEW RATES WILL ACTUALLY BE, SO PLEASE BE PATIENT. WE ARE EXPERIENCING  2 – 6   WEEKS AS BEFORE DEPENDING ON THE CLASS OF AIR MAIL USED AND IF ITEM IS HELD UP IN CUSTOMS, BUT SOMETIMES FOR LONGER FOR NO KNOWN REASON.

Shipments inside the US are also experiencing massive slowdowns, please be patient. Media Sometimes is taking 1 to 4 weeks with no rhyme or reason as to why.

IT WILL TAKE AT LEAST THE TIMES STATED ABOVE.    PLEASE DO NOT START ASKING WHERE IT IS IN A WEEK OR TWO AND ACCUSE ME OF NOT SENDING THE ITEM - SLOW DELIVERY TIMES BY THE POST OFFICE ARE NOT MY FAULT,   PLEASE BE PREPARED TO WAIT THE AVERAGE TIMES I HAVE STATED.

( Due to be budget shortfalls and massive job cuts, and projected closing of many distribution centers, that are  being implemented by the US Post Office   - we are already seeing delivery times longer than was seen previously – please be patient )

WE HAVE BEEN IN BUSINESS FOR OVER 50 YEARS & WE KNOW BY BITTER EXPERIENCE JUST HOW SLOW THE MAIL CAN BE. THANK YOU FOR LOOKING .
