The Koninklijke Marechaussee, the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee, abbreviated to KMar (English is Royal Marshals, but commonly seen as Royal Military Constabulary), is one of the four Services of the armed forces of the Netherlands. It is a gendarmerie force performing military police and civil police duties. The emblem of the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee is, as with many other gendarmerie forces, a flaming grenade. In the 17th century, a new weapon was introduced in Europe: the hand grenade. The soldiers who handled grenades were called grenadiers. They became an elite type of soldier in all European armies. In France, the grenade symbol was adopted by the gendarmerie, and this was imitated by similar forces throughout Europe. De Bijstandseenheid (afgekort BE) is een soort oproerpolitie van de Koninklijke Marechaussee (onderdeel van de Nederlandse Krijgsmacht). De BE is toegespitst op het handhaven van de orde bij gecompliceerdere situaties dan waar de Mobiele Eenheid (onderdeel van de Nederlandse politie) mee te maken krijgt. Men moet dan denken aan rellen waarbij vuurwapens worden gebruikt of wanneer krakers zich verschanst hebben in een gebouw en er om een meer gespecialiseerde aanpak wordt gevraagd dan de ME gewend is. Na een testperiode werd de BE volledig operationeel in 2006. The Assistance Unit (abbreviated BE) is a kind of riot police of the Royal Marechaussee (part of the Dutch Armed Forces). The BE is focused on maintaining the order in more complicated situations than where the Mobile Unit (part of the Dutch police) is concerned. One should think of riots where firearms are used or when crackers are in a building and ask for a more specialized approach than the ME is used to. After a test period, the BE became fully operational in 2006. The Kmar has been active for over a century and a half in the Caribbean. The military constabulary is responsible here for the military police task regarding the Dutch military who reside in the Caribbean. For that purpose the KMar structurally has a Brigade posted, under command of lieutenant–colonel Willy Mennen, of which the staff works in the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba.
The flaming grenade (but in this case within an eight-pointed star) was also the emblem of the Rijkspolitie.
