Silpheed was originally a Mega/Sega CD shooter which featured fairly simple Galaxians-style gameplay with some absolutely mindblowing visuals. The PS2 sequel feels more like a regular shooter than it's predecessor, possibly along the lines of Taito's RayStorm due to it's polygonal graphics and sort of 3/4 top down slightly into the screen viewpoint. Graphically it starts out beautifully, but some later levels do suffer from framerate glitches. Gameplay is simple fun, although quite easy, so die hard shooter fans will breeze through this game very quickly. Casual gamers looking for a fun shooter should be impressed though. Game Arts enlisted the help of Treasure to get the game finished, and when you stop to consider that this is the product of two of the finest software houses in the world, it is a tad disappointing. We all have our own theories... mine is that Game Arts gave up on the hardware. This game really should have been released on the Dreamcast. Of course, now that the Dreamcast is dead, the Game Cube hasn't done that great in Japan and the Xbox is just a fraction of what Microsoft hoped it would be in Japan, maybe Game Arts will have to face up to the PS2 as the only choice of console to release new software on.
