1768 Exemplary Novels of Spanish Cervantes Quixote Folkema Illustrated French 2v

“My genius and my inclination prompt me to this kind of writing; the more so as I consider (and with truth) that I am the first who has written novels in the Spanish language, though many have hitherto appeared among us, all of them translated from foreign authors. But these are my own, neither imitated nor stolen from anyone; my genius has engendered them, my pen has brought them forth, and they are growing up in the arms of the press.”

Miguel de Cervantes, boasting of being the first to write novellas in Spanish.

In 1613, when this collection of Spanish novellas was first printed, they were the most popular novellas of the time. Many of Cervantes’s novellas are still popular today, even though none of his work is as significant as ‘Don Quixote.’ These short stories would inspire many English dramas especially Middleton and Fletcher. This rare French two-volume edition was translated by Chassonville Saint Martin, according to the Cervantes Collection Catalogue. It also includes charming illustrated engravings by Jacob Folkéma and a “Life of the author”.
