You are bidding on a rare 1851 Braided Hair Half Cent.  It has almost perfect details on the obverse and reverse!!!!!!!!

Cents and Half Cents were the first coins minted for circulation by the United Stated Mint.  Production began in 1793 with Large Cents minted every year from 1793 to 1857, except for 1815 when lack of copper prevented production.  Half Cents were minted from 1793 to 1857, except for 1798, 1799, 1801, 1812 through 1824, 1827, 1830 and 1837 through 1839.

The Act of February, 21, 1857 brought about important changes and benefits.  By its terms, Spanish coins were redeemed and melted in exchange for new small cents.  The decimal system became official thereafter, and the old method of reckoning in reales, shillings, etc. was gradually given up (although the terms two bits and penny were still used).  The new small cent won favor and soon became a useful instrument of retail trade and a boon to commerce.

The Act provided for the coinage of the new Copper Nickel Small Cent.  It also called for Spanish and Mexican coins and old copper cents and half cents to be brought in and exchanged for silver coins or the new small cents.

If the buyer is unhappy with this rare Half Cent (for any reason), I offer a complete refund, including shipping, for 14 days.  Shipping is $2.00 but if buyer has won another of my auctions the same day, then shipping can be combined (only 30 cents for each additional auction won)!!  Thanks for looking and good luck on this rare 167 year old Braided Hair Half Cent!!
