I have here for sale a VERY RARE early 3-book collection of THE ILIAD OF HOMER translated by Alexander Pope, Vols II, III and IV. These 3 volumes cover Books VI to XXIV of the Iliad and Vol IV also has the following Indeces: of Persons and Things; Poetical; of Characters or Manners; of Speeches or Orations; Descriptions of Images; Similes; Versification; and of Arts and Sciences. Title pages in black and red lettering. Fold-out plate of the Shield of Achilles with observations and details on it. Both volumes published by D Midwinter in London in 1759. I have looked on the internet extensively and can only find one other copy of this edition.
Full brown leather boards with gilt border. 5 raised bands and gilt tooling to spines. Title blocks are missing but the Vol numbers are just about still visible. Boards firm and pages are clean and tight. Vol II 360 pages.Vol III - 388pp, Vol IV - 343pp. 18 x 10.5 cm.
