John MacGregor was born and educated in Nairn, Scotland. At age 20 he emigrated to Canada and by 1915 was trapping in the north of B.C. when a passing ranger told him Canada was at war. Although it was mid-winter. he trekked for five days through the bush to enlist. The book has entailed extensive interviews with John's contemporaries in both wars, and deep research into the events surrounding the award of the V.C. reveal how regiments working together used different maps of the battlefield and crossed each others paths
This biography, written by elder son, James MacGregor, traces John's life, beliefs, and his finding he was able to command men. The book tells of John's battles at Vimy, Hill 70, and Cambrai and of how he rose to the rank of captain with more awards for valour than any other Canadian soldier in all of Canada's history; In 1919 John left the army and worked as a fisherman, carpenter, mason, and millwright, made a historic 1929 dash to attend the Prince of Wales dinner in London and was a (failed) candidate in the 1933 provincial election.
In 1940 he enlisted as a private, was discovered, reprimanded, and commissioned major and rose to command the 2nd Canadian Scottish. This is a story of a strict Victorian father and his inability to show affection to his sons. A story of dedication to hard work, of pathos, of humour, and of how life was for Canadians in those early days of the 20th century.

John MacGregor VC MC & Bar DCM ED(1 February 1889 – 9
June 1952) was a Scottish-Canadian
soldier. MacGregor was a recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest
and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be
awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. MacGregor served in the Canadian
army in both world wars.
Macgregor was born in Cawdor near Nairn, Scotland in 1889
and moved to Canada in 1909. He served in the army from 1915 to 1919. MacGregor
was 29 years old, and a temporary captain in the 2nd Regiment, Canadian Mounted
Rifles, Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War when the
following deed during the Battle of the Canal du Nord took place for which he was awarded the
Victoria Cross.
During the period 29 September/3 October 1918 near Cambrai,
France, Captain MacGregor acted with most conspicuous bravery and leadership.
He led his company under intense fire, and although wounded, located and put
out of action enemy machine-guns which were checking progress, killing four and
taking eight prisoners. He then reorganised his command under heavy fire and in
the face of stubborn resistance continued the advance. Later, after a personal
daylight reconnaissance under heavy fire, he established his company in
Neuville St. Remy, thereby greatly assisting the advance into Tilloy.
Further information
MacGregor served again from 1940 to 1946, achieving the rank
of lieutenant colonel commanding the 2nd The Canadian Scottish Regiment
(Princess Mary's). He is buried at Cranberry Lake Cemetery, Powell River,
British Columbia

Please be
aware that the binding glue in vintage paperbacks is likely to be much drier
than newer books, and thus more fragile than more modern printings. Paper also
can be sometimes somewhat brittle.
All vintage
paperbacks require proper & careful care in handling & reading or the
spine glue will crack!!.
SHIPPING TIMES
WE HAVE NO IDEA HOW FAST THESE NEW RATES WILL ACTUALLY BE,
SO PLEASE BE PATIENT. WE ARE EXPERIENCING 2 – 6 WEEKS AS BEFORE DEPENDING ON THE CLASS OF MAIL
USED.
Shipments inside the US are also experiencing massive
slowdowns, please be patient. Media Sometimes is taking 1 to 4 weeks with no
rhyme or reason as to why.
IT WILL TAKE AT LEAST THE TIMES STATED ABOVE. PLEASE DO NOT START ASKING WHERE IT IS IN A
WEEK OR TWO AND ACCUSE ME OF NOT SENDING THE ITEM - SLOW DELIVERY TIMES BY THE
POST OFFICE ARE NOT MY FAULT, PLEASE BE
PREPARED TO WAIT THE AVERAGE TIMES I HAVE STATED.
(
Due to be budget shortfalls and massive job cuts, and projected closing of many
distribution centers, that are being
implemented by the US Post Office - we
are already seeing delivery times longer than was seen previously – please be
patient )

HOW SLOW THE MAIL CAN BE. THANK YOU FOR LOOKING . Bob Ruman
