Strategy & Tactics #58

Conquistador
The Age of Exploration, 1495-1600
Solo, 2 3 or 4 players

Conquistador recreates the 16th Century exploration and conquest of the New World (North and South America) by the major powers of Europe.
The game is quasi-historical in nature, providing the atmosphere and mechanics of the 16th Century world, along with historical personages. The object of the game is for one Country to accumulate as much wealth, land, and prestige (in the form of actual discoveries) as he can; the Country with the greatest total of all three is the victor
Originally published in 1976 by SPI in Strategy & Tactics magazine #58, and later sold as a boxed edition in a plastic tray, the SPI version is a one to three player game, featuring the Spanish (green counters), French (blue counters), and English (beige counters).
Optional Rules for Portugal or the German bankers as a fourth player are included, but no counters are provided in the game. There is also an optional rule for the Treaty of Tordesillas (delineating the New World territorial rights of the Spanish and Portuguese); as well as the Spanish Annexation of Portugal.
Scenarios include the Campaign game (1495-1600) and The Solitaire Scenario: Span in the New World.

The Players are after three objectives: Discovery Points, Political Points (control over the Areas on the Game-Map) and Wealth (Gold and Resources).  To accomplish these goals, players send expeditions with colonists and/or solders to settle and mine (or plunder, if you will) the riches of the New World.
During each Game-Turn, players use the Naval Phases to transport units and make discoveries; during the Land Phase, players use land units to make further discoveries as well as mine and collect Gold and Resources. During each of these Phases combat between opposing sides is possible, as well as Native Uprisings and Attrition, while Random Events throw an aura of uncertainty into each turn. At the end of the game, the Players add up their accumulated Victory Points and the winner is determined
