ES20c Escape from Greece 1942.Signed by Howell 6 Greek helpers

15 V 78 Aohmai CDS ( Greece ) Escape from Greece. Cover depicts fishing boat and Greek coastline, RAFES badge and ancient Greek helmet. The campaign which led to the Germans occupation of Greece in 1941 resulted in many airman evaders either being shot down or forced to leave their airfields as the Germans advanced. Help came from the Greek people, but few managed by sea either to Turkey or to North Africa. Flown in Britannia Airways Boeing 737-204 G-AXNC from Gatwick to Athens ( Greece ) by Capt Daymon, in Royal Hellenic Air Force Hercules C130 by Major Papadimitiou and in 10 Squadron VC10 XV109 from Athens to RAF Brize Norton by Sqn Ldr Hickman.

Personally Signed by Wg Cdr E.A. Howell OBE. DFC B.Sc OC 33 Squadron Hurricane shot – down over Crete, held as a POW in Dulag 183 Solonika who although injured escaped and with the help of the Greek people escaped by sea to Turkey and Mrs Sandra Poumpoura MBE, Greek Red Cross worker who helped many evaders in Athens,S Kitsos who helped Wg Cdr Howell and A Neslihanidis, A Zafiropoulos, D Karapas, and Mrs T Samara , all of whom helped RAF aircrews to evade capture.With Greek 2300 Xponia 7 DR stamp, Blacknames cachet , green flight cachet on reverse, 3 backstamps and photogragh of Wg Cdr Howell and full details of signatures of above.Certified copy signed 1178 of 1240.
