Foreword
Ko-Garatsu is the pottery with natural and unpretentious surface quality of the clay, bold form, and soft, somewhat nostalgic color tones. Idemitsu Sazo (1885-1981), the first director of the Idemitsu Museum of Arts, was deeply affected by and cherished Ko-Garatsu, the treasure of Momoyama ceramics. He assembled more than three hundred items, creating the largest Ko-Garatsu collection in Japan.
Demonstrating a variety of expressions, as can be observed in E-Garatsu, Oku-Gorai, Chosen-Garatsu, and Madara-Garatsu, not only was Karatsu ware highly valued during the war-torn period by the Momoyama tea masters and daimyo, it was also appreciated by entrepreneurs, critics and ceramic artists of Japanese modern age, who had formed the foundation of Japan today. And it still continues to attract our hearts.
Ko-Garatsu is filled with natural, sincere and warm qualities that are principle elements of ceramics, and it has inspired and healed people over generations. Boldness and calmness, strength and serenity -he grand scale of its inclusive quality embracing contradicting qualities lies in the center of Ko-Garatsu, the treasure of Momoyama ceramics.
Commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the opening of the Museum, we have selected for display, about one hundred and eighty items from the Museum's Ko-Garatsu collection, which represents the initial stage of the Idemitsu collection. We hope that you will enjoy the rich and embracing attractiveness of Ko-Garatsu through this exhibition.
