Product description

Antique Rare Staffordshire Joseph Stubbs Pearlware Cup & Saucer Opium Smokers

Offered for your consideration is a wonderfully rare and museum quality antique cup and saucer.
This Staffordshire piece of pearlware was made by the potter Joseph Stubbs at Longport in Burslem, England
around 1825. It appears common upon first glance. Further inspection tells us that this is a
highly unusual piece. The scene shows two oriental men sitting back to back by a lake, with
the man on the left smoking from an opium pipe! It’s quite an exotic subject material,
especially for the times.

The potter, Joseph Stubbs, was in business from around 1822 to 1835. He created a
handful of patterns on his earthenware and almost always drew his inspiration from American
themes. Several of his pieces are currently housed in American museums. This may be one of only
a handful of items like it in the entire world!

Saucer measures 5 3/4” in Diameter x 1 1/4” High
Cup measures 3 1/2” in Diameter x 2 1/2” High

Excellent condition! Both pieces have a few rough glaze imperfections from kiln marks. Cup
has a small rough kiln mark on the top rim. No chips or cracks. Some crazing on both
pieces which is typical for the age. Imprinted with the circular “Joseph Stubbs, Longport”
stamp and flower.
