Please note that the natural colour of the horn varies from pale ivory through creamy browns to almost black.

Each spoon is unique and the colour will vary.

The zebu horn crafting : see above photographs

The zebu is a robust and work cattle meat, essential for the life of the Malagasy people. Because from zebu nothing is thrown away, a family of Antsirabe is specialized in the manufacture of horn zebu to get magnificent works of art. First, the crafstman gets the bone out (yes, zebus have bones inside the horns that connect them to the body) by boiling the horn for 5 minutes ; then cutting it (with a machine he built himself with materials he found…) and heating it in the dying fire, to make it flexible and be able to get it into the form he wants. Now it’s time for the polish : 3 times, with different materials : glass paper recovered from woodcrafting companies, firmer glass paper, and… blue jeans (yes, with some wax that he creates from the excedent of horn… Very ingenious). The whole process ended up on a small spoon, one side finished, one side untouched. He can afterwards colour it with natural colorants : boiling the different plants and plunging the horn in the liquid for a couple of hours, and then drying it in the sun or in the shade, depending on the effect he is looking for.
